The Heart Necklace The original white gold diamond pave heart was worn from episode #2 (BE IT EVER SO MORTGAGED) to #101 (THE CRONE OF CAWDOR). It was also probably worn in #1, since the chain shows briefly in two scenes, but not the heart. This necklace was lost and was replaced with another one with a longer chain that made the necklace 1-1/2 to 2" longer. The longer chain appears to be first seen in #106 (NOBODY BUT A FROG KNOWS HOW TO LIVE). In episodes #102-#105, Samantha wears high necked costumes that prevent the presence/absence of the necklace from showing (there are two episodes in this group with the necklace showing that were shown out of production order, so we can assume the necklace was missing during this time). The second necklace disappeared from the program sometime between episodes #196 (TAKING A CHANCE ON LOVE) and #199 (TURN ON THE OLD CHARM). At first it was worn all of the time. Later it was not worn in all bedroom scenes, and eventually was hidden or missing in other scenes. For example, in episode #24 (WHICH WITCH IS WHICH), when Endora first doubles as Samantha, she wears the necklace; later she does not. In episode #95 (TRIAL AND ERROR OF AUNT CLARA) Samantha is wearing the necklace, zaps into her flying suit, and the necklace is gone; later the necklace appears with the flying suit. The heart dimensions are between 3/4 and 7/8 inches in both height and width. Both old and new hearts are about the same size.
Worn in nightgown scenes: #13 (LOVE IS BLIND), #25 (PLEASURE O'RILEY), #42 (TAKE TWO ASPIRINS), #64 (DOUBLE SPLIT), #80 (ENDORA MOVES IN FOR A SPELL), #86 (SAM'S SPOOKY CHAIR), #121 (MY, WHAT BIG EARS YOU HAVE), #123 (HUMBUG NOT TO BE SPOKEN HERE), #175 (AND SOMETHING MAKES FOUR).
Not worn with a nightgown: #77 (WITCHES & WARLOCKS ARE MY FAVORITE THINGS), #78 (ACCIDENTAL TWINS), #95 (TRIAL AND ERROR OF AUNT CLARA), #104 (HOW TO FAIL IN BUSINESS), #112 (CHEAP, CHEAP), #113 (NO ZIP IN MY ZAP), #156 (COUSIN SERENA STRIKES AGAIN II).
The necklace was also seen worn under a dress in episodes #37 (ALIAS DARRIN STEPHENS), #122 (I GET YOUR NANNIE YOU GET MY GOAT) and #132 (TO TWITCH OR NOT TO TWITCH), and was worn with beads in #57 (FASTEST GUN ON MADISON AVENUE).
What Size Was It? To determine when the necklace was switched from the original to the replacement, a series of measurements were made on still frames on the TV screen from a large number of episodes. Since the facial features were different for each scene, a ratio was used rather than an absolute number, with an estimate made on locket size and necklace length, rating the size of the image to a standard 7" face dimension. Two measurements were made: The distance from the hairline to the chin, and the distance from the hairline to the top of the necklace. Care was used to select full or nearly full face views there the head was held fairly level. Using 7" as a standard size for an average face from hair line to chin allows some degree of certainty in estimating sizes. Ratios were determined for the hair line to chin measurement divided by the hairline to the necklace measurement. Two classes of ratios came out of this: Numbers less than .600 and numbers over .650. This defined the original necklace as the larger numbers (shorter chain) and the replacement as the smaller number group.
